What’s the Best Loading Order for Moving Boxes?

Moving Tips

If you’ve ever spent an entire day packing up your home, you’ll know that figuring out how to pack all of your belongings into boxes can be more than a little tricky. And regarding organizing the contents of those boxes, figuring out the best order in which to stack them on the moving van is often just as difficult. But as it turns out -considering weight is more important than ensuring everything stacks nicely.

Here is the best loading order for moving boxes:

1. Label Your Boxes

This is a pretty obvious tip, but labeling your boxes when packing is important. Not only will you know where each box should be going, but they’ll also make it easier for the moving crew to organize things on the other end. If you have several boxes of artwork or other valuables, labeling them with words like “Fragile” or “Glass” can also save you some time for unpacking.

2. Skip the Laundry Bins and Totes

If you’re looking to save time and hassle on moving day, try to avoid “creative’ packing like filling laundry baskets or trash cans with your stuff! Trust us – plastic storage bins are great for those odd-shaped or fragile items that need special care during the move, but they don’t work well in the truck. So stock up on some extra boxes instead, and save yourself a headache!

3. Sort by Weight and Fragility

Grouping your boxes in the moving van according to weight and item fragility is important. As you start to pack, organize your items into three piles, based on weight: the heaviest, an average pile and the lightest.  Doing this will make it easier to create a strategy for loading when you begin to load the truck.

4. Create a Strategy

When loading your truck, we suggest starting with the heavier pieces such as dressers and bulky furniture at the back of the vehicle. This will provide a solid foundation for the rest of your items. Then it’s time to stack in those heavy boxes in one level, beginning from lowest. Afterwards, top off these boxes with moderately heavy ones before finally placing all of your lightest boxes at the very top. After that is complete you can move on to other items like chairs, suitcases and rugs!

5. Secure Everything Properly

To ensure your items are safe and secure, arrange them artfully in the truck – side to side, floor to ceiling and heaviest to lightest. If any furniture pieces could bang against each other or the walls of the truck during transport, simply wrap them in a plastic dropcloth or furniture pad for added protection.
